HECO Solar FAQs

What is HECO Smart Export?
Smart Export allows you to export stored battery energy to the grid during peak hours (4-9 PM) for credit. A battery is required. This program replaced legacy net metering for new Oahu solar customers.
What is HECO Customer Self-Supply (CSS)?
CSS requires that your solar system does not export any energy to the grid. All production must be consumed or stored on-site. A battery is effectively mandatory for CSS systems.
How do I interconnect my solar with HECO?
We handle the entire HECO interconnection process, including application submission, technical review coordination, and Permission to Operate (PTO) acquisition. Typical timelines range from 2-6 weeks depending on the utility and program.
Can HECO customers add battery storage?
Yes. Adding a battery to your solar system maximizes self-consumption and provides backup power during outages.
